Weather for the week of January 29th

The week of January 29th began with with highs in the low 30’s and partly sunny skies. Some overnight snow showers left as much as an inch of snow in some areas. By Sunday afternoon the sun had disappeared, the skies grew cloudy and the temperatures began to drop. On Monday the highs Will be in the mid 20’s with periods of sun and clouds. By Tuesday the temperatures will rise to the high 20’s but snow will move in with 1 to 3 inches throughout the day. Wednesday will By cloudy with highs in the low 30’s and snow showers throughout the day. Temperatures will drop into the high 20’s on Thursday with some sun but a continuing chance of snow showers. Friday will be partly sunny but highs will only be in the low 20’s. Saturday will be much the same with some sun and highs in the low 20’s. When the weather conditions are constantly changing, be sure you are dressed appropriately in clothing which will wick away moisture to keep you from developing a chill in colder temperatures. Clothes that have pit zips are great and layering with non-cotton materials are a must for the varying temperatures. Keeping hydrated in cooler weather can sometimes be tricky as you do not feel as thirsty but hydrating properly will allow you to hike longer and in greater comfort. It is also time to start bringing along the spikes or crampons since the melting and refreezing can cause spectacular areas of ice on the trails. Snowshoes will be useful especially at higher elevations where snow fell instead of rain. Be sure to carry water with you as local water sources can be unreliable and may be contaminated. The week of January 22nd began with an unseasonably warm Sunday with highs in the high 50’s with sunny skies. By Sunday afternoon the sun had disappeared, the skies grew cloudy and the temperatures began to drop. On Monday the highs made it into the high 30’s in most areas under cloudy skies. Throughout the day the temperatures remained near freezing with the threat of freezing rain or sleet. An initial forecast of 5 to 10 inches of snow was, sadly, downgraded. A wintry mix will fall over night on Monday. On Tuesday expect some snow and a wintry mix throughout the day with highs in the mid 30’s. Wednesday will have intervals of clouds and sun with highs reaching into the high 30’s. Although the temperatures on Thursday will See little change from Wednesday the skies will be overcast with a chance of rain in the afternoon. By Friday the temperatures will drop into the low 30’s with a chance of snow showers. On Saturday the highs will stay below freezing with cloudy skies and snow showers. The week of January 15th began a cold Sunday with highs in the mid twenties but with clear skies. On Monday the highs made it into the high 30’s in most areas under sunny skies. On Tuesday expect some freezing rain and ice on and off throughout the day turning to mostly rain in the afternoon. The highs will only be in the mid 30’s. There may be some rain and sleet in the evening turning to rain overnight. The highs on Wednesday will reach into the high 30’s but it will be cloudy with a chance of rain or snow showers in the afternoon. By Thursday the precipitation should end and the skies will be partly sunny with high in the low 40’s. Friday’s temperatures will be much the same vu the skies will be mostly cloudy. The temperatures will drop into tTe high 30’s on Saturday with the chance of a morning shower and cloudy skies throughout the day. The week of January 8th began a cold Sunday with highs in the upper teens. There were numerous snow showers and the wind chill stayed below 0 for most of the day. On Monday the highs will only reach into the high teens with the wind chill barely breaking into double digits. On Tuesday expect some snow in the afternoon with highs in the highs 20’s. More snow will accumulate overnight turning to sleet or freezing rain by Wednesday morning. On Wednesday the precipitation will turn to rain by late morning with highs in low 40’s. The warming trend will continue on Thursday when the highs will reach the mid-40’s with more rain throughout the day. The precipitation should end by Friday but the “war,” weather will stick around for one more day with highs in the mid 40’s. By Saturday the temperatures again drop and precipitation will fall as an icy mix. The highs on Saturday will only teach into the high 20’s. The forecast for Monday included periods of freezing rain which never developed. The morning temperatures were in the low 20’s but rose to the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Tuesday began with light rain and temperatures in the high 30’s. The forecast for Wednesday calls for cloudy skies and double digit winds dropping the temperature from the high 30’s to the high 20’s. By Thursday the cold moves in and the breeze remains. The highs should be in the low to mid 20’s but the windchill will only barely crack the double digits. On Friday the cold remains with highs in the low 20’s and cloudy skies. The wind will diminish so the windchill will be close to the actual temperature. Saturday looks to be much the same with temperatures in the low 20’s but with periods of sun.
