Barkaboom Mountain is one of the more western CHH peaks located in the Town of Andes on Delaware County. It is only accessible by bushwhacking and much of the surrounding land is privately owned. Also, the peak marked on many maps is NOT the highest peak that is called Barkaboom Mountain. Consult the Acme map on the CHH peaks list on this site for the location. One way to hike this peak is to park on Cross Mountain Road and hike across the DEC land located there. Cross Mountain Road can be accessed from both ends but is very "seasonal". A vehicle with a higher clearance and 4 wheel drive may be a good idea. From Livingston Manor (Exit 96 from I86) drive north and west on Old Route 17. Turn right on Beaverkill Road and continue on this road through the hamlets of Lew Beach and Turnwood. Turn left on Alder Creek Road just after Turnwood. At the end of this road you an turn right to go to Alder Lake. Stay left on Cross Mountain Road. Drive to the highest point on the road and watch for DEC signs on the left. Park on the right or left side of the road in small pulloffs. Cross Mountain Road can also be accessed from the Millbrook Road.
Head across the road and into the woods. Head west and UP until you are on the ridge. From here stay on the ridge and keep looking for higher ground. This path will begin to take you southwest toward the peak. The woods may be wet in places which breeds nettles in the warmer months. Otherwise the hike is through relatively open woods. There are a few cliff bands but these are easily negotiated. Once at the "top" wander around until you feel you have hot the peak and then claim victory! There is a large boulder near the top. Follow roughly the same path to get back to your car.
